The New International Version squeezes another exclamation mark into the chapter, and the New English Bible also has four. These include Moffatt, the New American Standard Version, Translator’s New Testament, New Jerusalem Bible, New King James Version, English Standard Version, New Revised Standard Version, Orthodox Study Bible, and so on. The vast majority use exclamation marks modestly, for example, in Romans 3 only after the three “God forbids” or equivalent. Knox and the Jerusalem Bible have no exclamation marks. Modern translations fall into three categories: zero, three, and more. The exclamation mark was used in the modern sense in English printing in the late 15th century, and was thus available for the AV’s translators. The Nestlé Greek Text has Me genoito, and the Vulgate has Absit, both with no exclamation mark, and the AV follows this example. Any addition of exclamation marks is therefore a matter of usage and style, and since this reveals nothing except the mind of the translator, I would be surprised if the exercise had been attempted.Īn obvious place to look for their usage is Romans 3, where the Authorised Version has Paul use the words “God forbid” three times. Hebrew orthography does not include such a sign.
